Photo Engraving Tips & Guidelines

Custom Photo Engraving Tips & Guidelines

The better the photo, the better the result

Image Upload Requirements

File Format: We accept JPG, PNG, and high-resolution image files.

Image Quality: For best results, upload high-resolution images (at least 300 DPI). The clearer your photo, the better the engraving will look.

Send the original file when possible.  Screenshots can lose up to 70% of their detail.

Best Photos for Engraving

High Contrast: Photos with good contrast between light and dark areas.    Black and white or high-contrast color photos work best.
DO: Choose a photo with a simple contrasting background.
DON'T: Use photos where the subject's hair or clothing match the background.

Clear Focus: Choose images that are sharp and in focus. Blurry photos won't engrave well.  If the photo is blurry on your phone, it will be blurry on the wood.

Simple Backgrounds: Photos with clean, uncluttered backgrounds produce the clearest engravings.

Close-ups: Portraits and close-up shots typically engrave better than distant or group photos.  This does not mean zoomed and cropped this can lead to pixilated images.

Lighting is Everything: Avoid "flat" lighting (overcast days with no shadows) or "extreme" lighting (half the face is pitch black).
Outdoor lighting is the very best.

  • What to Avoid
  • Low-resolution or pixelated images
  • Photos with very light or washed-out areas
  • Images with too many fine details that may not translate well
  • Screenshots or images downloaded from social media (often low quality)
